From Selected Poems, by Earle Birney
BOOKLOST LADY
"Lanknosed lady sits on a seawall
not alone she sits with an older book
Who is it? Shakespeare Sophocles Simenon?
They are tranced as sinners unafraid
in the common gaze to pursue
under hard covers their private quaint barren
affair though today there is no unbusy body
but me to throw them a public look"
