From The Heart of Hawthorne's Journals, edited by Newton Arvin
LEIGH HUNT
"A light, mildly joyous nature, gentle, graceful, yet perhaps without that deepest grace that results from strength. I am inclined to imagine that he may be more beautiful now, both in person and character, than in his earlier days; for the gravity of age sheds a venerable grace about him, after all, and gives a dignity which he may have lacked at first."
From Hawthorne's Journal, October 5th, 1855, on meeting Leigh Hunt.
