Crossing the ave through the other people up and about at 6:30 in the morning, unloading their trucks and setting up the stalls.
Back in the old days there was a coffee cart in the lobby and we'd push it slowly up through the Gift department and out through the north doors and then set it up by the main entrance. It was like easing a battleship into dry dock, every turn fraught with imminent if ponderous disaster. By 7:30 the barristas would be passing out drinks to a grateful and yawning crowd.
I'd try to show up a little early as the garbage men hated any event that delayed them. I'd had them blast by the back dock before anyone (i.e., me) showed up to put out the dumpsters and I'd have to call in for a reluctant and grumpy pick-up.
Requests would begin as soon as I showed up. Someone would knock on the glass door to get my attention as I walked through flipping on lights. They might need a table, or an electric cord and of course electricity, sometimes water; all apparently approved by management but completely new to me. Simple requests, usually and of course we aim to please.
The bathrooms were the biggest worry and I was permanent latrine orderly but on Street Fair days I enlisted Shirley as Deputy Assistant, Woman's room division. She got pretty good at changing cloth towels and when we upgraded to paper she went with the flow. The lines were long but folks were amazingly patient except when I had to close the Women's. Girls can be all sugar and spice until nature calls and gets a busy signal. I've seen women swarm the men's room and hold it against all male intrusion, however urgent.
Still, it was exciting and active, with the promise of elephant ears and salmon on a stick. Good times.Walthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00928271919273796598noreply@blogger.com
